I am an Interior designer passionate and determined as can be.
I strive to make a space become a place through continuous hard work and creative thinking.

Delta sewage works in Johannesburg is an abandoned building rich with history and context. The building is degrading when it could be used to uplift and amuse the people in its surroundings. My approach was to design a gastronomic restaurant through deriving inspiration from the history of the site. The activating sludge system inspired the space through the process it goes through to purify the water which includes releasing methane gas to power the plant. The design is derived from the methane gas bubbles also created in frozen water in lakes. The bubbles accentuate the biomorphic shapes and connects directly with its natural surroundings, only enriching the nature around it and not interrupting it.
Due to the booming creative industry in South Africa the design scope was to create an Arterial Network which is a space where all the creative industry’s people are able to work together. The concept was “Chance”, not only the chance the new and upcoming designers would have collaborating in this space but also derived from the concept of children block play between the ages of 0-4. The idea revolved around the abstract block playing and brain development of the children. A little girl called Phia was used to analyse the block playing and shapes and colours were used as an outline of the abstract building. The building is truly an artwork of children play. “let the creativity be as free as children’s block play”.
Buildings are not always universally and inclusively designed to accommodate people of all capabilities. The idea was to create a fully accessible hotel in Stellenbosch more specifically focusing on the blind and the deaf. The carnivore Cobra Lilly plant had the same coping methods as the blind and deaf community and was used as inspiration of the design of the space. Through the movement and organic shapes which were used as design informants to create the final solution.
Admitting when something was not to standard and criticising one’s own work is hard. This project was used to determine which areas needed improvement. The identified areas were reworked and improved to create unity and quality in the project. The focus was on Gastronomic lighting as well as the disruption of the non-functional column as a barrier in the store. The chosen designer was Haldane Martin which is also my favourite industrial designer.
My knowledge about lighting plans and lighting specification documents was applied in this project. The sourcing and specification of lighting fixtures were selected and types of lighting were analysed to apply the correct lighting. The result was an industry standard lighting plan.
Drawing an existing staircase showcased my knowledge on the in-depth understanding of the standards and construction of staircases. My technical skills on Revit were tested and appropriate drafting conventions and appropriate plan format were also considered.
Ramps are an important element to interior designers in order to make buildings fully accessible. An analysis on an existing ramp in Stellenbosch was used to draw a set of as-built drawings. The ramp was analysed in ratios, lengths and the width. And whether adheres to the minimum standards of the SANS-10400. A set of appropriate drawings in accordance with the appropriate drawing conventions and plan format is the end result.
The skin is the body’s oldest form of protection. The sensory experience of touch which is stimulated through the skin is heightened through using building materials to create a fashion garment. Hoop-iron strap was used as the main building material and the concept was derived from the concrete jungle of Cape Town. The industrial style is carried through to resemble the structural elements of the buildings and is joined with cold and hard materials. A spacial representation of the final design garment has been translated into an industrial bathroom speaking words about the continuous lines and vertical shapes.
